Content & Organization of the SREs

Since each individual SRE is designed for a specific text, each of them contains different teaching and learning activities. However, in order to facilitate your use of the individual SREs on this Web site, each SRE contains the same eight sections. These are listed and briefly described below:

(1) Table of Contents. This lists the following seven sections of the SRE and provides a hyperlink to each of them.

(2) Introduction. This is a brief introduction to the text and, in some cases, the author.

(3) Objectives. Here, we list the major objectives for the SRE.

(4) Higher Order Thinking Skills. Here, we list the higher order thinking skills emphasized in the SRE.

(5) Chronological List of Activities. This section provides a list of activities for the SRE in an outline form. Activities include a selection of the pre-reading, during-reading, and post-reading alternatives listed above.

(6) Detailed Description of Activities. This section describes the activities outlined in #5 in detail.

(7) Student Materials. This section provides the actual materials used in teaching a reading selection, for example, previews, discussion questions, and writing activities.

(8) Resources. This section includes a source or sources of the reading selection itself, including an Internet source if there is one, and supplementary materials to facilitate your teaching it. Possible supplementary materials include criticism or book reviews, multimedia materials, additional readings by the same author, additional readings on the same topic, Internet sites, and references.
